have your self a simple little christmas

Dec

i love christmas! i especially love the smells, the sights & the sounds. i have a cinnamon vanilla candle burning right now and it has filled my house with the smell of delicious warmth. i could stay inside all day feeling cozy here with these pretty things, especially with the clouds and rain we have going on outside! there is so much commercial christmas that exists in our world, and frankly, it's just not for me :) this year we have created a simple little christmas theme in our house...using items we had lying around to decorate, or those we bought for dirt cheap at a second hand store. this was a great way to get our five year old involved in decorating and i also love that we are teaching her that it doesn't take a lot of money to have things that mean a lot to you. i thought i'd share a few of my favorites decorations and hopefully it will inspire a spirit of simplicity in your life, too!

our paper holiday. we used tons of white tissue paper to make giant layered paper decorations & hung them with bakers twine. we lined the windows with tissue snow balls and then made simple garland using cupcake wrappers and bakers twine.

more detail...

we threaded clear plastic cups and filled some with paper to make them hang in different directions. anthropologie did some awesome things with plastic cups & wax for holiday displays this year...i love how they use inexpensive items to make incredible works of art! we also strung tiny pieces of tissue paper balls on the bakers twine to make light and fluffy garland. i love how delicate they look and feel.

we are using plain cardboard boxes for gift wrapping and decorating them using pieces of burlap. the tissue paper flowers are so simple to make...just torn pieces of paper, layered together and fastened with a green brad.

more tissue paper garland that simply lines the banister. and since i don't love traditional wreaths, i made a simple berry bouquet, wrapped in burlap & tied with green floral string. i fastened the burlap using a simple pearl corsage pin.

one of my favorite finds this year...christmas lights from the 1950's. i found this non-working strand for $1 and also found a strand that still works for $5! i love the oversized bulbs and especially love how the paint is chipping away from them. this little display sits on our front porch in our old red wagon. i got an eclectic mix of old wood pieces bunched together with twine, threw them in the wagon with the old lights & elle sprinkled snow all over it.

a simple white dove welcomes us home and reminds us that christmas is more about grace, peace, love & joy than anything else.

can't wait to share photos from our christmas card once i get those sent out tomorrow!!
